There are many people who are excellent stewards of their time and who go an extra mile whenever the situation calls for it. These people come from all walks of life. These people demand no more reward for their effort of helping others than the satisfaction of knowing they are what the civilized world is about.
During the hurricane season of 2005, flocks of volunteers and the news media swarmed into the south. We could see and hear blow by blow descriptions of the great heroism and good deeds going on. All too soon the news media and many of the volunteers left leaving a small group of volunteers who stayed behind-for they were happy to go an extra mile.
Every day there are thousands of people in the United States who are faced with crisis in their lives and there is no press to tell us of their needs. These people are the sick, elderly and handicapped who suddenly need help in order to survive but have no means of acquiring the needed help. They may need something as simple as assistance with getting out of bed or taking a bath.
Who is responsible to help these people with their needs? They are people with too many resources to qualify for welfare but without enough resources to manage on their own. They really need someone to go an extra mile.
Our "An Extra Mile" programs works in conjunction with local churches and synagogues. We strive to keep people from falling through the cracks by finding people in our communities to put forth small amounts of time to "Go An Extra Mile" to help people in their time of need.
We develop the program in one of two ways. The preferable way is for Care For People to help establish a local organization to run the program. The alternative is for the local director of Care For People to set up and operate the program which entails a $2.00 fee per hour for each case filled.
Any profit over the minimal fee is given back to the community to use for the benefit of the sick, elderly and handicapped or to help fund programs for those who have problems existing on their own.
